Kay Niuyue Zhang
My name is Kay Niuyue Zhang and I am a director and producer based in Los Angeles. After graduating from Duke University with a Bachelor's degree in International Comparative Studies, and working as a bilingual Production Coordinator for a year, I decided to pursue my long standing love for films and filmmaking and attended USC School of Cinematic Arts for an MFA program in Film Production.
My short film “Mother in the Mist” now distributed by Amazon Prime Video for VOD, and aired at PBS for cable, was awarded the DGA student Award Grand Jury Prize for Best Women Filmmaker, and the Jury Prize at the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the 75th Festival de Cannes. I also produce extensively, my previous work winning the Gold Medalist of the 47th Student Academy Awards, and Special Jury Prize at the BAFTA Student Film Awards 2021. My projects are supported by Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, FOX Fellowship Endowment Fund, Lisa Lu Foundation, Warner Brothers’ feature project with USC and several other generous funds.
My creativity is inspired by my experience as an international citizen who constantly crosses borders both physically and culturally. Films that reflect nuanced emotions and struggles of diverse children and women evoke my deepest empathy. Thus I surround my creative world with the subtle and sensitive experiences of marginalized and diasporic children and women.
